Picking up Lucy today from the pet hospital. Here’s hoping we stay home and well this time.

When a mistake is made & the first question asked is, “Who did this? Who’s responsible?” It’s probably not a psychologically safe environment. If your goal is to name, blame, & shame your own employees, how can you be surprised when they don’t take risks or initiative?

Hearing NPR play some Beyoncé (and Bonnie Raitt say she’s a big fan) warms the cockles of my shriveled little heart. I hope RENAISSANCE 🐴 absolutely sweeps the Grammys. It is such a tremendous dance record for so many reasons.

On a positive note, I seem to have somehow landed a new job. It’s all still a bit up in the air. There’s not even a job description written yet. But the Director said she wants “the best” for this new role and she believes that’s me. Glad at least one of us does! 😵‍💫

Back to the ER with Lucy, who’s refusing to eat.

Back in her own bed ❤️🐶

Lucy is back home. Still has a few days of stabilization and medication to go, but she’s heading the right direction I think. ❤️🐶

Lucy had a good night and was more alert this morning. They’re still stabilizing her insulin levels but she’s on track to come home this afternoon. 🐶❤️

Our Lucy Beagle has pancreatitis which is being complicated by her diabetes so they want to keep her another 24 hours in the hospital. She’s still not eating so they’re going to put a feeding tube in to get some calories into her. They’re going to monitor her glucose and adjust insulin dosages. The doc said most dogs heal fine after having a swollen pancreas, so he’s “cautiously optimistic” which I guess is positive.

HIS TRUTH IS MARCHING ON

In my Christian upbringing, from which I’m still recovering, I sang for our small, all white, mostly out-of-tune church choir. 🎵 The Battle Hymn of the Republic was always my favorite song to sing. We only sang it once a year. It was one of the few performances that would earn applause from the quiet, conservative, white audience in the pews. I never knew its history until reading this piece.

On sobriety: it’s funny to me how, from one perspective, 7 days is nothing but barely even a speck. But from another perspective 7 days is everything. An absolutely monumental milestone.

Posted this on LinkedIn. Really hoping I don’t get fired for it. A few years ago, my profile photo was a picture of me with Jane Elliott, a well-known, wonderful, brassy and outspoken anti-racist advocate. She was my hero then, and she still is. But these days I have an additional hero: Heather Cox-Richardson. Profoundly intelligent and brave, she speaks the truth, and she speaks it to power with such grace that I am always in awe when I read a piece of her writing.

WHAT I THOUGHT OF WEB 2.0

In grad school I took a knowledge management foundations class that I really liked. Each week we had to post these “blog points” and then we’d read each other’s posts and comment on them and get our participation points for the week. You know, as you do. Today I came across this one blog point I’d written for that class. It’s living as a writing sample in my portfolio on my (now rather stale) website, librarymatthew.

Roberta Flack’s first piano came from a junkyard – five Grammys would follow Roberta Flack recently announced that she has ALS. She can no longer sing or speak. Tragic. That really makes me sad. :(
