On Friday evening, we went to see a local performance of Into the Woods (my favorite musical) with the Super Drag Queen herself, Nina West, starring as The Witch. You may know Nina West from her appearance(s) on RuPaul’s Drag Race. You may know Nina West from her philanthropy. You may know Nina West from her turn as Edna Turnblad in the 2021 national tour of Hairspray! I know Nina West from being invited to perform in drag in one of her Heels of Horror Halloween drag shows, and turning down the opportunity. It truly remains one of my major life regrets. I don’t know why I didn’t do it. On the surface, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to afford it (drag is expensive!). On a deeper level, I think I was just convinced I didn’t deserve to be a part of it. That I could never be a good drag queen so why would I bother? That there would be no way I’d ever fit in. And so I politely thanked her and said I couldn’t do it. I wish I had. I wish I had gone further with drag. I really liked it the handful of times I got to do it.
