Musical ESP strikes again.
This time it was “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds.
You know, the song that played on Weeds in the opening credits? And they changed it up each season?
We were in the car. I was driving and, obviously, controlling the music. I rather insist on it. (And by “rather” I mean, “DO NOT TOUCH THE STEREO, HUSBAND.”) I started to play the Randy Newman version from Season 3, but Husband hates Randy Newman so I changed to the Malvina Reynolds version from Season 1. Husband did not touch the stereo, per previous instruction.
I played “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds as we were driving up a long hill to check in to our cabin for our long weekend which we’re taking to celebrate our 9th anniversary which is today. I played “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds because we saw some ticky-tacky houses on the hillside while we drove, and they all looked just the same.
“It’s such a great song,” I said when it finished.
We got to the cabin, settled in, sat outside, and listened to the birds. We went inside and talked, then got ready for and drove to dinner, which we ate and enjoyed. We came back, got settled, and I turned on the TV.
A commercial started. I’d never seen it before because I don’t like commercials and try to avoid them.
And what song started playing in that commercial?
It wasn’t Big Circles, I’ll tell you that much.
It was Little fucking Boxes.
